ELDER RUFUS BOLYN BRICKS AND TILES ENTERPRISE constructions company limited came across a housing delivery system using the Interlocking bricks for the construction of houses around 1994/95 through a customer of ours who brought a sample of this brick to our office and demanded that we design a brick making machine for the type of brick for him. This brick as the name indicate is designed to interlock i.e. key into one another upward to downward and sideways. The conventional system of  building with bricks that adopt the use of the regular or standard bricks are  the one laid into walls by Cement and Sand mortar joining. This writer successfully built his Ondo town house in 1996 using this system of Interlocking bricks without mortar joining the walls. History have it that these bricks have its origin in South Africa from where the technology was exported to Nigeria. Bolyn constructions company limited was able to use the experience that we acquired in the fabrication of the Cinva ram brick machine to design and  fabricate the manually operated Interlocking brick machine in 1994/95. The machine make bricks of size of 230mm by 230mm by 120mm.

ADVANTAGES OF USING THE INTERLOCKING BRICKS TO BUILD YOUR HOUSE.

1]. The Bricks can be used to build a house in a mortar less construction i.e. Dry stacked.

2]. The Brick width of 230mm make the house so built to offer better insulation against cold and heat.

3]. The Bricks are load  bearing and have the ability of been used for a single storey building without the use of pillars.

4]. Building with this bricks achieve a faster construction time because of the no need to mortar join the walls in majority of the sections of the house.

5]. Labor cost for joining the walls using the Interlocking bricks is reduced as the walls can be built by both un-skilled and semi-skilled labor.

6]. These bricks can be used to build walls that will require no plastering with Cement mortar both internally and externally.

7]. Cement and Sand mortar requirement for this type of housing is reduced substantially because a greater part of the walls do not require it.

8]. When the Interlocking walls require to be plastered, it is noted that the Cement sand mortar requirement is very low on account of the grooves on the bricks that aid better adhesion.

9]. The Brick making operation is easy to learn, it can be learned in a few days by the un-skilled labor whose wages are very low.

10]. The walls of houses and structures constructed by these bricks can  be painted or polished.

11]. All activities of Brick making can be site concluded with minimal handling and no  vehicular transportation of moving the bricks is needed.

12]. Conduit of plumbing and electrical pipes can be achieved using these bricks.

13]. Bolyn constructions company limited have designed a wooden pallet that is supplied with our machine with which channel bricks can be made. These channel bricks can be used to form ring beam that eliminate the conventional lintel at the top of windows and doors.

PROCEDURE FOR BUILDING A HOUSE WITH INTERLOCKING BRICKS.

a]. The Interlocking bricks are not used in the foundation of the house, we advise all house builders using this brick type for building to adopt the conventional foundation system known and approved in their area.

b]. The Interlocking bricks are used after the DPC level, they are to be mortar jointed to the foundation.

c]. A half brick is required at the corners with their top projections removed. The next bricks are full size bricks that must have half of their top projections removed.

d]. Top courses near the roof, gable ends, windows and doors surroundings are to be mortar jointed and all corners are to be rendered with Cement sand plaster.
